Interlaken in autumn, lakes and mountains

Switzerland · Field notes

INTERLAKENAutumn doing all the talking.

Two lakes, a river the color of glass, and four days of trains, cable cars, and leaves that did more work than any slogan.

Not a postcard.
A valley that bills in francs.

Interlaken sat me down between Thun and Brienz and then sent me up. Harder Kulm in the wind, Lauterbrunnen like a hallway of water, Schilthorn in a cabin that refuses to pretend it’s a metro. The town is small. The vertical is not. I paid in francs and walked until the mountains had made their point.

Where I actually walked.

Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.

Intel

The useful layer — which pass is actually a ticket, which mountain wants a reservation, and why this is not a metro city.

Harder Kulm

The hometown mountain. Funicular, two lakes, three peaks arguing in the distance. Sunset if the wind lets you stand still.

Lauterbrunnen

A valley that looks like someone folded the earth and left the water on. Staubbach falling like a held note. I already went. I’d go again.

Schilthorn

Cable cars stacked like a dare. Piz Gloria at the top, Bond still hanging around the restaurant, Alps that don’t care about the movie.

The town

Höhematte in the middle, streets that end in mountains. Interlaken is a hinge, not a capital. Walk it before you leave it.

Aare

The river between the lakes. Turquoise that looks edited. Sit on the bank. Don’t try to make it a water park.

Fall, walking

The trees did the talking. Gold on the slopes, a church steeple, a path that didn’t need a ticket. This is why I came when I did.

What stayed on the roll.

Seven places I actually stood in. Not every peak — just the frames I kept.

The streets, between lakes

A town that knows it’s a hinge. Windows, signs in German, a mountain at the end of the block. I walked it before I went up.

Autumn doing the work

Gold on the slopes like someone had paid for it. I didn’t. The trees just showed up. This is the Switzerland I actually got.

Harder Kulm, looking down

The funicular, then a deck, then two lakes that finally made the map make sense. Wind. A railing. Interlaken looking small on purpose.

Steeples the color of the valley. I didn’t go in for a sermon. I went in because the door was open and the mountains were loud enough already.

Schilthorn, and the cabin

Cable car over a drop that makes conversation stop. Piz Gloria at the top. Bond still selling breakfast. The Alps didn’t need the plot.

The Aare, unedited

Water that looks like it was poured from a bottle. I sat. I didn’t swim. The river was doing enough.

Lauterbrunnen, already

Cliffs like walls, water that doesn’t stop. I took the train in and walked until the valley had said its piece. This was not a maybe. This was a day.

Still on the list.

Four days is a first draft. These are the rides I didn’t take — the ones I’d book first if I went back tomorrow.

Jungfraujoch

The Top of Europe pitch. Snow in summer, an ice palace, a price that wants a speech. I skipped it. I’d still do the math before I did the mountain.

Expensive · book early Jungfraujoch ↗

Lake Brienz

The other lake. Boat from Interlaken, color that looks fake. I stayed on the Aare and told myself it counted.

Boat or train

First cliff walk

Grindelwald First, a walk over air. I ran out of cable-car days. The photos look like a dare I didn’t take.

Trümmelbach

Waterfalls inside the mountain, near Lauterbrunnen. I was already in the valley and somehow still missed the inside.

If you have a fifth day.

I already spent a day in Lauterbrunnen. These are the other leaves that actually fit from Interlaken — train if you can.

Lauterbrunnen

Already did it. Train from Ost. Walk the valley. Staubbach. This is the day I would not skip twice.

Half day · train

Grindelwald

The other jaw of the Jungfrau region. Train from Ost. First if you have the legs and the ticket.

Day · train SBB ↗

Lucerne

A chapel bridge and a lake that wants a slower afternoon. Direct-ish train. A city day if the mountains have already won.

Day · train

Bern

The capital, arcades, a river the same color as here. Train. Useful if you need a city that isn’t trying to be a viewpoint.
