Bikes that don’t slow down for you, brick that does, and four days of canals, a house behind a bookcase, and getting out of the way on purpose.
Amsterdam captured me in the ring of canals: a tram bell, a window with a plant, light the color of a warning vest. The museums are loud. The bike lane is louder. I booked Anne Frank weeks ahead, ate herring like I meant it, and learned that standing still in the street is a kind of volunteer work.
Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.

The station is a greeting and a crowd. I used it, photographed it, and got out of the bike path in front of it.
The bookcase, then the rooms. Quiet that isn’t empty. Book it. Walk-up is a rumor people tell themselves.
Dam Square, the palace, a building that used to be a city hall and still acts like one. Go in if the square hasn’t already spent you.
A Buddhist temple on Zeedijk, red and unexpected after the brick. Chinatown without the performance. I went in.
Canals that behave, cafés that don’t, a neighborhood that still feels like people live there. Walk it in the evening.
Walk them. A cruise is optional. The Amstel does more work from a bridge than from a boat with a microphone.
Must. Timed tickets on the official site, often weeks ahead. If it’s sold out, that’s the answer — not a man with a lanyard on Dam.

Walk upA shop, a wedge, something aged that isn’t a souvenir ball. Eat it. Don’t only photograph the round ones in the window.
€8–15Warm, from a market stall, over a cup if you want the caramel to give up. The packaged ones are a different country.
€2–4Raw herring, onion, pickle, standing up. A flag of a snack. Do it once like you mean the city.
€3–5A cone, too many, mayonnaise that isn’t apologizing. Not a side. A plan.
€4–6Hot, breadcrumbed, a warning in the middle. With beer. This is the café hour, not a tasting menu.
€6–10A brown café. Don’t spend the trip in a tourist pancake house because the menu has a windmill on it. Pancakes exist. They are not the assignment.
€5–8King’s Day, Christmas, August: the second you know. Otherwise 6–8 weeks. Anne Frank tickets are a separate, earlier problem.
Jordaan — evenings, canals, you walk home. Canal belt — the postcard, and the prices. Near Centraal — trains, noise, easy if your flight is a morning argument. I wanted to walk at night, so I stayed where the water still looked like a street.
Skip the hotel that sells the view of a tram. Sunday–Thursday. A place with a bike is a real line item. City tax is extra and nobody warns you like a friend.
Tulips if you leave town. King’s Day if you like orange and crowds. Café weather. Peak prices. Still the easiest Amsterdam to like.
Long evenings, full boats, a city that knows it’s famous. Crowded. Hide at noon. The canals don’t get wider.
Lower sun on brick, fewer people after the summer. Rain that means it. One of the two best windows.
Short days, lights, brown-café interiors. Pack a coat. Cozy, if you like gray water.
The city. Rent one, or use the hotel’s. Stay in the lane. Ring. Assume every tourist will step backward into you, because you will also be that tourist once.
From €10/dayGVB. Above ground, so you see the brick. Tap in. This is how you cross town when the bike is a bad idea in the rain.

FreeThere is a metro. It is not how Amsterdam thinks. Don’t plan this like Paris. Plan it like a bike with a tram backup.

Four days is a first draft. These are the rooms I didn’t get into — the ones I’d book first if I went back tomorrow.
I missed it. Timed out of tickets, timed out of days. Book it with Anne Frank, not after.
