The streets, between lakes
A town that knows it’s a hinge. Windows, signs in German, a mountain at the end of the block. I walked it before I went up.
Switzerland · Field notes
Two lakes, a river the color of glass, and four days of trains, cable cars, and leaves that did more work than any slogan.
Interlaken sat me down between Thun and Brienz and then sent me up. Harder Kulm in the wind, Lauterbrunnen like a hallway of water, Schilthorn in a cabin that refuses to pretend it’s a metro. The town is small. The vertical is not. I paid in francs and walked until the mountains had made their point.
Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.
The useful layer — which pass is actually a ticket, which mountain wants a reservation, and why this is not a metro city.
The hometown mountain. Funicular, two lakes, three peaks arguing in the distance. Sunset if the wind lets you stand still.
A valley that looks like someone folded the earth and left the water on. Staubbach falling like a held note. I already went. I’d go again.
Cable cars stacked like a dare. Piz Gloria at the top, Bond still hanging around the restaurant, Alps that don’t care about the movie.
Höhematte in the middle, streets that end in mountains. Interlaken is a hinge, not a capital. Walk it before you leave it.
The river between the lakes. Turquoise that looks edited. Sit on the bank. Don’t try to make it a water park.
The trees did the talking. Gold on the slopes, a church steeple, a path that didn’t need a ticket. This is why I came when I did.
The trains are the city. Download the app before you stand on a platform looking hopeful. Interlaken Ost is the one that actually goes somewhere.
Buy in the app SBB ↗Mountain tickets live on jungfrau.ch. Schilthorn sells out on pretty days. Jungfraujoch is the expensive sibling I skipped.
Book ahead Jungfrau ↗From town, up. Round trip unless you like descending like a goat. Weather cancels the view, not always the ticket.
Day-of is fine Harder Kulm ↗Do the math. Trains, boats, buses — the pass is the ticket on what it covers. Mountains are often a discount, not a free ride. If you’re sitting in town eating fondue, skip it.
Run the numbers Swiss Travel Pass ↗Optional. Weather decides. A tandem over the lakes if you want the air, not if you think Interlaken requires it.
OptionalThe Aare banks, Höhematte, the churches, fall paths. Show up. The mountains don’t take appointments for looking.
Walk upCheese, wine, bread you are not supposed to drop. A cold night’s correct order. Don’t treat it like a light lunch.
CHF 25–35Potato cake that means it. Crisp edges, a fried egg if the kitchen likes you. Mountain food that doesn’t pretend to be delicate.
CHF 18–28A bar from a shop, not a gift-box performance. Eat it on a bench. It tastes better when your hands are cold.
CHF 5–15A stand, a bun, mustard. Between trains. The honest snack of a country that bills in francs.
CHF 8–12A bakery in town, still warm. Butter and almond and the kind of morning that starts before the funicular.
CHF 5–10Sit once. Then the mountains. Café crème is not a day plan here.
CHF 4–7Summer and foliage weekends: months ahead. Shoulder weeks: a month is enough. Snow weeks if you want skis, not if you want trails.
Interlaken Ost — the trains to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Lucerne. You hear them. Interlaken West — a little quieter, Lake Thun side, still a walk or a bus. I cared more about the morning train than the pillow.
Quieter. You wake up in the valley instead of commuting into it. Waterfalls at breakfast. Fewer late restaurants. If the town feels like a hinge, stay on the door that opens to the cliffs.
Snow still on the peaks, trails opening, water loud. Shoulder crowds. Pack a layer you will actually wear.
Hiking weather, full trains, prices that know it. Go early on the mountains. The town is a corridor.
This is when I went. Gold trees, colder mornings, fewer people after the summer rush. Autumn doing all the talking.
Snow, short days, some paths shut. A different trip. Don’t pack like it’s September and hope.
The town is a walk. The mountains are not. Save your legs for the valley floors and the viewpoints, not for pretending Schilthorn is a stroll.
FreeSBB is how you leave town. Ost station, then Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Bern, Lucerne. The app is the timetable. This is not a metro city.
By distance SBB app ↗The vertical public transit. Harder, Schilthorn, the Jungfrau region. Weather closes them. Check before you climb to a closed door.
Ticket or passIf you bought a Swiss Travel Pass, you don’t buy a second slip for the trains it already covers. Show it. Board. Mountain rides are often 50% off, not free — still do the math at Schilthorn.
Included, or not Swiss Travel Pass ↗PostBus and local buses stitch the bits the train shrugs at. Same pass logic. Not a substitute for the funicular.
By rideExists. Expensive in the way Switzerland is expensive. I used trains.

Seven places I actually stood in. Not every peak — just the frames I kept.

A town that knows it’s a hinge. Windows, signs in German, a mountain at the end of the block. I walked it before I went up.
02 / 07
Gold on the slopes like someone had paid for it. I didn’t. The trees just showed up. This is the Switzerland I actually got.
03 / 07
The funicular, then a deck, then two lakes that finally made the map make sense. Wind. A railing. Interlaken looking small on purpose.
04 / 07
Steeples the color of the valley. I didn’t go in for a sermon. I went in because the door was open and the mountains were loud enough already.
05 / 07
Cable car over a drop that makes conversation stop. Piz Gloria at the top. Bond still selling breakfast. The Alps didn’t need the plot.
06 / 07
Water that looks like it was poured from a bottle. I sat. I didn’t swim. The river was doing enough.
07 / 07
Cliffs like walls, water that doesn’t stop. I took the train in and walked until the valley had said its piece. This was not a maybe. This was a day.
Four days is a first draft. These are the rides I didn’t take — the ones I’d book first if I went back tomorrow.
The Top of Europe pitch. Snow in summer, an ice palace, a price that wants a speech. I skipped it. I’d still do the math before I did the mountain.
Expensive · book early Jungfraujoch ↗The other lake. Boat from Interlaken, color that looks fake. I stayed on the Aare and told myself it counted.
Boat or trainGrindelwald First, a walk over air. I ran out of cable-car days. The photos look like a dare I didn’t take.
Mountain ticket Grindelwald First ↗Waterfalls inside the mountain, near Lauterbrunnen. I was already in the valley and somehow still missed the inside.
Ticket at the door Trümmelbach ↗I already spent a day in Lauterbrunnen. These are the other leaves that actually fit from Interlaken — train if you can.
Already did it. Train from Ost. Walk the valley. Staubbach. This is the day I would not skip twice.
Half day · trainThe other jaw of the Jungfrau region. Train from Ost. First if you have the legs and the ticket.
Day · train SBB ↗A chapel bridge and a lake that wants a slower afternoon. Direct-ish train. A city day if the mountains have already won.
Day · trainThe capital, arcades, a river the same color as here. Train. Useful if you need a city that isn’t trying to be a viewpoint.
