Darjeeling stole the week with cold mornings and tea that tastes like the slope it grew on. I watched sunrise paint Kangchenjunga from Tiger Hill, walked Mall Road until the lamps came on, and still made room for momos, thukpa, and a Glenary’s bakery table. The hills reward early alarms and warm layers.

The useful layer — a 4am jeep for Tiger Hill, tea-garden timing, Mall Road on foot, and when the monsoon makes the hills hard.
Wake before 4am. Golden light on Kangchenjunga is the postcard. Book the jeep the night before. Carry a jacket — the ridge is freezing even in spring.
Happy Valley and the terraced slopes that built the town’s name. Walk the rows, taste a flush if the estate is open, buy from authorized dealers.

Near Mall Road / Chowrasta — walk everywhere that matters in town. Quiet lanes above the market — sleep without jeep horns. Stay close enough that a 3:30am Tiger Hill pickup is not a negotiation.
Homestays beat view-premium rooms if Mall Road is a ten-minute walk. Shared jeeps beat private taxis for most day trips. Tea is cheaper at estates than airport gift shops.
10–20°C — best overall. Clear mountain views, First Flush tea, rhododendrons. Book hotels early. My preferred window with autumn.
15–20°C, hard season for views — fog, landslides, washed-out plans. Lush tea gardens if you accept the weather. Not the Tiger Hill gamble.
8–18°C — post-monsoon clarity, Second Flush tea, festival energy. Excellent photography weather. Strong second choice after spring.
2–10°C, cold mornings, occasional snow dusting. Cozy cafés, budget rates, fewer crowds. Pack layers like you mean it.
How the hills actually move — NJP/Siliguri to Darjeeling, and day trips when full. ₹200–300 per seat on the climb; private taxis cost more.
