DARJEELINGQueen of the Hills — mist, tea, and Kangchenjunga light.
Tiger Hill before dawn, emerald tea terraces, a white Peace Pagoda above the town, and Glenary’s pastry when the cold catches up. Shared jeeps, Mall Road walks, and a toy train when the rails are running.
~4Days in the hills
4amTiger Hill start
∞Cups of tea
Mist first. Then the mountain.
Darjeeling stole the week with cold mornings and tea that tastes like the slope it grew on. I watched sunrise paint Kangchenjunga from Tiger Hill, walked Mall Road until the lamps came on, and still made room for momos, thukpa, and a Glenary’s bakery table. The hills reward early alarms and warm layers.
Where I actually went.
Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.
Happy Valley and similar estates may offer factory walks and tastings. Hours change with harvest and weather — ask your hotel the day before.
Walk-up / ask
🤍 No reservation
Peace Pagoda, Mall Road, most viewpoints on a clear morning. Show up early for Kangchenjunga light before the haze builds.
Walk up
🥟 Momos
Steamed or fried — veg, chicken, pork — with spicy chutney. Kunga and stalls near Chowrasta keep the comfort food honest.
₹80–150
🍜 Thukpa
Hot noodle soup for cold evenings. Sonam’s Kitchen or Glenary’s when you want a table and a bowl that warms your hands.
₹100–180
🍵 Darjeeling tea
Champagne of teas — First and Second Flush if you care about leaf. Sample at estates; buy sealed from authorized dealers.
₹300–2000 / 100g
🍰 Glenary’s bakery
Colonial-era bakery and café. Fresh bread, cakes, breakfast that still feels like the hill station’s living room. Keventer’s shares the same era.
₹150–400
🍩 Sel roti
Rice-flour doughnut from roadside vendors — crisp outside, soft inside. Perfect with tea.
₹10–20
🥟 Shaphalay
Tibetan meat-filled bread, deep-fried. Hasty Tasty and local cafés. Vegetarian versions exist.
₹60–100
📅 When to book
March–May and October–November need a head start. Festival weekends fill Mall Road hotels. Monsoon is quieter and wetter.
📍 Where
Near Mall Road / Chowrasta — walk everywhere that matters in town. Quiet lanes above the market — sleep without jeep horns. Stay close enough that a 3:30am Tiger Hill pickup is not a negotiation.
💵 Spend less
Homestays beat view-premium rooms if Mall Road is a ten-minute walk. Shared jeeps beat private taxis for most day trips. Tea is cheaper at estates than airport gift shops.
🌸 Mar–May
10–20°C — best overall. Clear mountain views, First Flush tea, rhododendrons. Book hotels early. My preferred window with autumn.
🌧️ Jun–Sep monsoon
15–20°C, hard season for views — fog, landslides, washed-out plans. Lush tea gardens if you accept the weather. Not the Tiger Hill gamble.
🍂 Oct–Nov
8–18°C — post-monsoon clarity, Second Flush tea, festival energy. Excellent photography weather. Strong second choice after spring.
❄️ Dec–Feb
2–10°C, cold mornings, occasional snow dusting. Cozy cafés, budget rates, fewer crowds. Pack layers like you mean it.
🚙 Shared jeeps
How the hills actually move — NJP/Siliguri to Darjeeling, and day trips when full. ₹200–300 per seat on the climb; private taxis cost more.
Shared / private
🚂 Toy train
If running — joy rides and scenic segments. Not reliable as your only transit. Book when you care about the steam, not the clock.
When running
🚶 Walk Mall Road
Chowrasta and the mall are the walkable core. Steep lanes elsewhere — shoes with grip. Offline maps help when signal dips.
Free
🚕 Local taxis
Tiger Hill round trips, tea gardens, viewpoints. Negotiate before you sit. Hotel drivers beat random roadside hires.

✈️ Getting there
Bagdogra airport (~3.5 hrs) or New Jalpaiguri rail. Pre-book the hill transfer. Give yourself an acclimatization evening.
IXB / NJP
Select your citizenship
Where are you currently residing?
Domestic travel within India. Indian citizens do not need a visa for Darjeeling — this is not an international entry.
✈️ Domestic trip
VisaNone for Indian citizens traveling inside India
IDAadhaar, passport, or other accepted domestic ID for flights / hotels as required
GatewayBagdogra (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP), then shared jeep / taxi into the hills
🪪 Carry anyway
Government photo ID
Flight / train tickets to Bagdogra or NJP
Hotel booking confirmation (hotels often ask at check-in)
Cash for shared jeeps — apps are patchy in the hills
💡 Tips
This is India domestic — not a US / Schengen problem
Altitude and winding roads matter more than paperwork
Book early-morning jeeps the night before in peak season
Monsoon can wash out plans — check road status
📍 Local note
Mall Road is walkable. Shared jeeps are how the hills actually move. The toy train is a joy ride when it is running — not your primary transit.
Important: Hotel and airline ID rules still apply. Carry a government photo ID even on domestic hops.
Entering India — not US domestic travel. If you are an Indian citizen on H-1B, H-4, OPT, or similar in the United States, a trip to Darjeeling means an international flight into India. Use your Indian passport (or OCI / applicable documents as your status requires). This is not US domestic travel.
✈️ India entry
VisaIndian citizens enter India on an Indian passport — no tourist visa required
OCIIf you hold OCI (or another applicable document), follow current Bureau of Immigration rules
US statusKeep H-1B/H-4/OPT valid for US re-entry; India does not fix US visa stamp problems
🪪 Carry anyway
Indian passport (valid)
US visa stamp / I-797 / EAD as relevant for return to the US
Return ticket to the United States
Hotel bookings in the hills
📄 Re-entering the US
Valid US visa stamp in passport if your category needs one
Do not assume automatic re-entry — check your status before you leave the US
OCI holders who are foreign nationals follow foreign-national entry rules into India
💡 Tips
Bagdogra and NJP are the usual gateways — pad connection time
Shared jeeps leave when full; private taxis cost more
This trip is international immigration into India, then domestic hills travel
Rules change — indianvisaonline.gov.in / BOI for foreigners; passport.gov.in for citizens
Important: Status questions are individual. When in doubt, check Bureau of Immigration / your counsel — not a blog comment thread.
Indian visa / eVisa required. US citizens need a valid Indian visa or eVisa before flying to India. Darjeeling is not US domestic travel.
📅 eVisa / visa
WhatIndian eVisa (tourist) or visa from an Indian consulate — confirm eligibility on the official portal
Applyindianvisaonline.gov.in (official eVisa) or a consulate for stamp visas

EntryImmigration decides at the airport — a visa is not a guarantee of entry
🛂 Entry checklist

Enough funds for the stay
💡 Travel tips
Apply before you buy nonrefundable hill transport
Bagdogra (IXB) is the usual air gateway
Carry warm layers for early mountain mornings
Verify current eVisa categories on the official site only
📍 Local note
Mall Road is walkable. Shared jeeps are how the hills actually move. The toy train is a joy ride when it is running — not your primary transit.

What stayed on the roll.
Nine chapters from the hills — Tiger Hill gold, tea terraces, a white pagoda, Kangchenjunga when the mist lifts, Mirik water, Zero Point air, Char Dham stone, and Samdruptse above Namchi.

Tiger Hill, before the town wakes
Four in the morning, a jeep, and a ridge full of strangers waiting for the same first light. When Kangchenjunga catches gold, the cold stops mattering. This is the frame Darjeeling keeps selling — and somehow still earns.
01 / 03
02 / 09
Tea that tastes like the slope
Emerald terraces like a staircase into mist. Walking the gardens and sipping the leaf where it grows is the town’s softest hour — floral, muscatel, unhurried.
01 / 02
03 / 09
White stupa above the noise
The Peace Pagoda holds a quieter register than Chowrasta. White stone, prayer space, and a balcony view that makes the market feel far below.

04 / 09
When Kangchenjunga shows
Some mornings the third-highest peak is only rumor behind cloud. On clear days it owns the horizon. You do not schedule that — you wait, then stop walking.
01 / 01
05 / 09
Mirik, quieter water
A lake day away from Mall Road — pines, boats, reflection. Darjeeling’s intensity softens here. Worth the shared jeep if your legs need a flatter hour.
01 / 02
06 / 09
Zero Point air
Standing near the Nepal border line with a Himalayan panorama that feels like a map edge. Crisp wind, photo stops, the sense of two countries sharing one ridge of sky.
01 / 03
07 / 09
Char Dham in the hills
Siddheshwar Dham brings replica Char Dham shrines and a Jyothirlinga to the ridge. Pilgrims and day-trippers share the stone. Spiritual volume without leaving Sikkim’s southern approaches.
01 / 04
08 / 09
Samdruptse, Namchi
Guru Padmasambhava above the valley, prayer wheels turning, a hilltop that feels like protection more than tourism. Pair with Char Dham if you are already on the Namchi road.
01 / 01
09 / 09
Tenzing Rock
Named for Tenzing Norgay — a training rock that reminds you these hills raised people who climbed higher than viewpoints. A short stop, a longer respect.
Still on the list.
The roll filled with sunrise and tea. These are the rides and rooms I still owe the hills.
🚂 Full toy-train segment
I caught the idea of the Himalayan Railway more than a long steam day. A proper joy ride when service cooperates is unfinished.
Half day
🍃 Estate tasting, slower
A guided factory walk with a seated tasting — not a photo stop between jeeps.
Morning
⛰️ Batasia Loop at golden hour
War memorial, spiral track, mountain backlight. I passed it on a schedule. Next time, linger.
Evening
🧘 Monastery morning
Ghoom and town monasteries deserve a quieter hour than a checklist stop.
Morning
If you have another day.
Mirik for water, Namchi for statues and Char Dham stone, or a slower tea-garden morning if Tiger Hill already spent your alarm.
🏞️ Mirik Lake
Boat rides, pines, a softer day than Mall Road. Shared jeep out and back.
Day · jeep
🙏 Namchi — Samdruptse + Char Dham
Guru statue, prayer wheels, Siddheshwar Dham replicas. One full day if roads cooperate.
Day · jeep
🍃 Tea estates, unhurried
Happy Valley or another open estate without a Tiger Hill hangover. Taste, walk, buy sealed leaf.
Half day
🧭 Zero Point border views
If your routing already climbs that way — panoramic stops and thin air photos.
