The valley woke up first
Balloons are a crowd in the sky that still looks quiet from the ground. I kept shooting after the first lift. The light changes faster than the baskets do.
Turkey · Field notes
Balloons at an hour that should be illegal, chimneys that look posed, a cave you sleep in. Göreme is the base. The rest of Cappadocia is a series of walks that keep pretending they are the same landscape.
I came for the balloons. I stayed for the hour after they leave, when Göreme is just a village cut into rock and a cat who owns a doorway. Paşabağ, Pigeon Valley, Love Valley, Uçhisar — they look like one photograph until you walk them. The underground city is a different country under your feet. Four days is a first draft of a region that is not a city.
Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.
A balloon that cancels for wind, museum tickets that are not a tour bus, and a visa that is not Schengen.
The valley fills before the sun does. You can ride or watch from a rooftop. Wind cancels more often than Instagram admits. If you fly, pick a licensed operator and treat the alarm as part of the ticket.
The base. Rooftops, cave rooms, a cat, chimneys you walk between to buy water. The open-air museum is next door. The village is the rest of the day.
Monks Valley. Fairy chimneys with hats. A short walk that photographs like a longer one. Go when the buses have a gap.
A lookout, then a walk if you have the legs. Dovecotes in the cliff. Göreme on one side, the rest of the geology on the other.
The formations have a reputation. The walk is still a walk. Late light is kinder than noon.
The castle is a rock the town grew around. Climb for the map of the region. The village below is the part I would sleep in next time.
Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu — pick one. Low ceilings, a model at the door that makes the maze honest. Not a casual stroll. Watch your head.
An open-air museum that used to be a village. Quieter than Göreme’s museum if the buses went to the other lot.
Book a TURSAB-licensed operator. Weather is the real ticket office. Confirm cancellation terms in writing. Rooftop watching is free and still a show.
Book · weather TURSAB ↗Göreme Open Air Museum, Zelve, underground cities — official museum tickets, not a man with a laminated sheet at the parking lot.
Ticket muze.gov.tr ↗The frescoed churches. Go early. Dress for sun. The village is free; this ticket is the painted rooms.
Ticket Göreme museum ↗Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu on the same museum network. One is enough unless you collect tunnels.
Ticket Official museums ↗Pigeon Valley lookout, Love Valley rim, Göreme rooftops, Uçhisar village streets. Paşabağ has a site fee some seasons — check the booth.
Walk upKayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV), then a transfer to Göreme. The region is not a metro map.
Flight + transferI ate it in Göreme. Meat, fire, bread. The hotel breakfast is a different meal. This is the evening.
TRYMeat sealed in a clay pot, broken at the table. Tourist-famous. Still worth it if the kitchen is doing the work, not a microwave.
TRYStuffed flatbread, made in front of you. Lunch that does not need a white tablecloth.
TRYCheese, honey, olives, eggs, tea in a tulip glass. Cave-hotel mornings are the reason you booked the cave.
Often includedSalted yogurt drink. The heat antidote after a valley.
TRYTea is not a course. It is the pause. Accept it.
TRYI slept here. Soft rock, thick walls, a courtyard hung with carpets. Book the cave, not the “cave-style concrete” next door. Ask.
Walkable, balloon pickup, restaurants. The practical base. Rooftops for the morning you do not fly.
Quieter nights, castle views, a short drive to the valleys. I would try it on a second pass.
Prices are in lira. A balloon is the line item that eats the week. The valleys are cheap once you have a ride.
Green valleys, balloon season that behaves, crowds that have started. One of the two windows.
Hot stone. Walk at dawn. Hide at noon. Balloons still fly when the wind agrees.
The other window. Softer light, harvest, fewer tour buses if you are lucky.
Snow on chimneys is a different postcard. Some hotels close. Balloon mornings get cancelled more. Bring a coat that covers the cave chill.
The village is the transit. Valleys need a scooter, car, or a tour van. Shoes that forgive dust.
The tourist default. Helmet. Dust. A map that actually loads. Not a toy if you have never ridden.
Red/green/blue tour colors are a sales language. Check the stop list. I used them for distance, walked when the van parked.
Airport runs and late valleys. Agree the price. Dolmuş exists between towns if you like a puzzle.
Useful if you want Zelve and an underground city without a group. Parking in Göreme is a mood.

Ten chapters. Balloons, Göreme, a cave I slept in, three valleys, Uçhisar, the underground, Zelve, mosaic lamps, the courtyard of carpets at Osmanbey, and the rest of the crafts that followed me home in the photographs.

Erciyes sits in the back of the frame like it owns the weather. The red dress was for the photograph. The village is stone, caves, rooftops, and one cat who did not care about the panorama.

Osmanbey Cave Hotel. Sleeping in a cave is a sentence until you do it. Thick walls, a cool room, furniture that looks borrowed from a different century. I would book the cave again before I booked the view.

Paşabağ for the chimneys with hats. Pigeon Valley for the cliff and the lookout. Love Valley for the joke in the geology. They are close on a map and far on the legs.

The filenames guessed. The castle is a rock the size of a town. From the top, Cappadocia finally looks like a map instead of a maze.

The model at the entrance is the honest photograph. Inside is a corridor that keeps choosing down. I ducked more than I walked.

Zelve is a village that emptied into a museum. Near Göreme we walked into a cave that was not on the ticket — twice. All of it counted.

A shop of Ottoman lamps — each one a small stained-glass planet. I reached up to one and the ceiling kept offering more.

Osmanbey Cave Hotel hung the kilims like another geology. I stood in it. I sat in it. The walls were wool.

Barbecue in Göreme. Pottery. A dervish who turned until the room forgot the souvenir shops.
Four days is a first draft. These are the rooms I didn’t get into — the ones I’d book first if I went back tomorrow.
I did the village and the views. The frescoed churches are the ticket I would buy on day one next time.
Watching from a rooftop is still a show. Riding is a different sentence. Wind is the editor.
A canyon walk with a river. Too far for the Göreme loop I ran. Next time, a full day.
I photographed the pots. I did not sit at the wheel. The Red River town is the afternoon after the valleys.
I did one maze. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are not the same hole. One is enough; both is a personality.
I saw the castle in daylight. The village after the day-trippers leave is the stay I sketched and didn’t book.
The region is larger than Göreme’s postcard. These are the leaves that actually fit.
Canyon, churches in the rock, a river. A van or a rental, not a stroll from the cave hotel.
Day · transferPottery town on the Kızılırmak. Combine with a valley you skipped. Walk the workshops, don’t only the showroom.
Half dayQuieter valleys and a Greek town that kept the stone. Only if Göreme already felt small.
