Cobbles, a chariot on top, a cathedral roof, and four days of U-Bahn, autumn trees, and a gate that used to be the end of the map.
Berlin captured me in the seam: a square that used to stop you, a tower the East left standing, trees doing the work in fall. The monuments are loud. The U-Bahn is how you actually move. Four days is a first draft of a city that was two.

The useful layer — a dome you register for, Museum Island tickets, and BVG without buying a monthly you will not finish.

Walk upSausage, curry ketchup, a paper tray. Not a meal. The correct hour is after the U-Bahn and before whatever is next.

€5–8Sour, cloudy, a shot of syrup if you want the local joke. Raspberry or woodruff. Not a serious beer. That’s the point.
€4–6Jam doughnut. Locals do not call it a Berliner here. Powdered sugar on your coat. A bakery, not a photo.
€2–3Markthalle Neun if you want the Thursday crush. Otherwise a neighborhood market and whatever is in season.
€8–15Summer and Christmas need a head start. Fall — when the trees do the work — is kinder. A few weeks is usually enough.
Mitte — the monuments, the walk, the prices. Kreuzberg / Neukölln — evenings that are not a gate. Prenzlauer Berg — quieter, still a U-Bahn.
Do not pay extra to sleep in the photo of the gate. The S-Bahn is the view. A courtyard building off the ring is the Berlin room.
8–18°C, parks opening, fewer lines. Easy walking weather. The city without the summer crush.
18–26°C, long light, lakes, festivals. Book the dome. Hide at noon if you melt.
8–16°C, the trees I actually photographed. Festival of Lights if you hit October. One of the two best windows.
−2–5°C, markets, short days, museums that earn their heat. New Year at the gate is a crowd, not a plan unless you like that.
Mitte is walkable. The rest of Berlin pretends it is. Shoes. Then the U-Bahn when the next pin is a neighborhood away.

Four days is a first draft. These are the rooms I didn’t get into — the ones that are not optional if you go back.
The stretch that is still a wound, not a mural. Watchtower, documentation, a quiet that is not a postcard. I stayed on the monument circuit.
