Brussels paints its side streets. A mural, a joke, a city that is funnier than the EU quarter. I kept the wall, not the parliament.

Rain, a statue smaller than the souvenir shops, a square covered in gold, and three days of frites, cobbles, and Europe in miniature because the weather said so.
Brussels captured me in the rain: an umbrella, a bronze kid behind a fence, then Grand Place turning the volume up. The pentagon is a walk. Heysel is a metro. I ate standing up and let the cobbles argue with my ankles.

Gold guildhalls, a square that does the work. Night is the better photograph. You do not need a ticket. You need to look up.
Smaller than the souvenir. An umbrella helps. Two minutes, a fence, a bronze boy who has been famous too long. Then walk away.
A garden, a view, the city stacked. The photograph is the stairs. The museums next door if you still have eyes.
The continent in miniature because the weather said so. Replicas you have already stood under elsewhere. Oddly soothing. Heysel, not the pentagon.

The pentagon is a walk. Ankles, rain, a city that expects both. This is how you actually see it.

€4–7Liège in the hand, Brussels on a plate. Sugar pearls if it is the dense one. Tourist carts will overdo the cream. Eat it anyway or don’t — the city will not mind.
€5–10A shop that still smells like cocoa, not a mall. One bag. They do not travel as well as you hope, and you will eat them on the train.
€6–15A glass that matches the beer, if the bar is paying attention. Trappist, lambic, something sour. Sit. This is not a flight for a story.
A pot, a pile of shells, frites because Belgium said so. Messy. Share it or don’t finish it.
€18–26Beef in beer, sweet-savory, a winter plate. Frites again. The city repeating itself on purpose.
€16–22Weekends fill Grand Place hotels. A few weeks is enough unless it is Christmas. Rain is not a season. Pack the umbrella anyway.
Near Grand Place — tourist, loud, you walk out into the gold. Saint-Gilles / Ixelles — better evenings, actual restaurants, a tram back.
The waffle street is not a neighborhood. One metro out and the room gets honest.
10–20°C, terraces, a city that still rains. The umbrella in the photograph is not a prop.
18–25°C. Crowds on the square, frites weather. Heysel is easier than the pentagon at noon.
8–16°C, fewer people, beer that tastes like the season. One of the two best windows.
2–8°C, markets, gray that means it. Chocolate and a table. Pack a coat.
The pentagon is the point. Cobbles, rain, Grand Place to Manneken in a few minutes that feel longer because of the shops.

This is the city under your feet. Ankles, rain, a pentagon that is older than the waffle carts. I kept two frames of stone because the gold already had enough.
Three days is a first draft. Heysel without the Atomium still bothers me. The EU quarter does not.
I did Mini-Europe and left the atom for later. It is next door. If you go to Heysel, do both or admit you came for the toys.
