A cathedral that took centuries, a gallery that took an emperor’s name, and three days of risotto, rooftops, and a painting you book like a flight.
Milan captured me from the roof: spires like a forest, the city underneath looking practical. Then the Galleria, then a last supper I had to earn with a reservation. The monuments are marble. The evenings are aperitivo. I walked the Duomo cluster until the stone had made its point.

The useful layer — the Last Supper you book weeks ahead, the rooftop ticket, and a metro that actually behaves.
Marble lace under your shoes. The city from the forest of spires. This is the ticket. The nave is the other one.
Inside: height, stained glass, a scale that makes your voice come out smaller. Dress like a cathedral, not a runway.
Iron and glass, a mosaic bull people spin on, shops that cost a month. Walk through. You don’t have to buy the month.
Santa Maria delle Grazie. Fifteen minutes in a room. Leonardo fading on purpose. Weeks ahead, or you don’t go.
A castle that still occupies the park. I mapped it. I didn’t finish it. The courtyard is the free preview.
Duomo square, pigeons, the city arriving. Sit on the steps you are allowed to sit on. Watch Milan happen at ground level.
Timed rooftop on the official site. Stairs or lift. The cathedral pass is a separate thought. Don’t buy a man with a lanyard in the piazza.

Walk upSaffron, butter, a patience you can taste. Often next to ossobuco. This is the city’s actual dish, not a side.
€15–22Veal, bone in if they’re doing it right, lemon. Milan’s schnitzel with better lighting. Not a light lunch.
€18–28A drink, a spread, early evening. Navigli if you want the canal. Don’t confuse it with dinner unless the spread is honest.
€8–15Season. Christmas in a box. Don’t hunt it in July and be disappointed in a city that already told you.
SeasonAfter the Duomo, when your feet file a complaint. Pistachio that tastes like nuts, not paint.

€1–3Fashion Week is a different city — book the second you know. Otherwise 4–6 weeks. Last Supper tickets are the earlier problem.
Near the Duomo — you pay for the walk. Navigli — evenings, canal, a tram home. Porta Venezia — actual neighborhood, easier on the wallet, still on the metro.
The hotel glued to the piazza is a souvenir. A side street and the M1. August is empty and hot. Sunday–Thursday is kinder.
Walkable, café evenings, Design Week if you like a crowd with a badge. Peak, but the marble looks right.
Milanese leave. Some shops close. Heat. Last Supper is easier. The city feels like it’s holding its breath.
Fashion Week noise, then a calmer city. One of the two best windows if you aren’t here for a show.
Fog, lights, panettone in season. Short days. A coat. Aperitivo still works.
Cathedral, Galleria, piazza — that’s a pedestrian afternoon. Shoes, water, done. The Last Supper is a longer walk or a short metro.

Three days is a first draft. These are the rooms I didn’t get into — the ones I’d book first if I went back tomorrow.
The opera house. Red velvet, a museum, a night if you pack one. I walked past it like a tourist with a metro to catch.

Train to Como or Varenna. Water, villas, a slower afternoon. The easiest leave. Don’t try to see every town.
