Venice canals

Italy · Field notes

VENICEA city that forgot
how to be land.

You stop looking for sidewalks and start listening for water. Four days of bridges, wrong turns, and a vaporetto that is just a bus with better scenery.

6Places that stuck

Not a postcard.
A city that runs on water.

The first day I kept hunting for a curb. Then I stopped. Venice is islands that decided streets were optional. The monuments are loud. The alleys are the trip — and Burano is the day you remember you can still leave the labyrinth.

Where I actually walked.

Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.

Intel

Tickets for the palace, a spritz that is not a souvenir, and how not to treat a gondola like a bus.

St Mark’s Basilica

The mosaics are the point. Modest dress. The square floods in acqua alta — boots, or a different morning.

Doge’s Palace

The Bridge of Sighs is a corridor with a nickname. Book the palace. The exterior is free and still does the work.

Rialto

The bridge is a walk-up. The market in the morning is the version that still sells fish, not fridge magnets.

Vaporetto

It is a bus on water. Line 1 is slow and useful. Venezia Unica for tickets. Do not guess at the machine in a crush.

Burano

A vaporetto, not a mirage. Color, lace, lunch. Combine with Murano only if you like glass more than time.

Accademia

Venetian painting without the palace theater. I walked past it. That was a mistake I can still fix.

Itineraries

Pick a recommended length. The day-by-day plan shows up underneath.

What stayed on the roll.

Six places I actually stood in. Not a complete Venice — just the frames I kept.

The canal, not a street

I kept looking for a sidewalk. The water was the sidewalk. Palaces on either side like they had always been barges that forgot to leave.

Gold that does not whisper

St Mark’s from the outside is already an argument. I did not go in on this pass. The mosaics will wait. The square did not.

The drawing room, with pigeons

Piazza San Marco is a waiting room that charges for the chairs. Orchestras, flood boards in winter, a basilica that looks like it was assembled from several empires.

Paint that refuses to fade

Burano is a vaporetto, then a village that decided gray was optional. Lace shops, a leaning campanile, canals that look posed. I stayed longer than the timetable wanted.

Still Burano

More color, fewer people if you walk one canal over. The island is small. The photographs are not.

One more turn

Venice rewards the alley you did not mean to take. A bridge, laundry, a boat that is someone’s driveway. This is the city after the postcard.

Still on the list.

Four days is a first draft. These are the rooms I didn’t get into — the ones I’d book first if I went back tomorrow.

Doge’s interior

I did the façade. The halls, the prisons, the sigh. Next time I buy the ticket before the square fills.

Accademia

Venetian painting in a quiet building. I had a vaporetto to catch. That is not a reason.

Murano

Glass that is actually made, not just sold. A shorter hop than Burano. I spent the day on color instead.

Jewish Ghetto

Cannaregio, the word itself, a neighborhood that still keeps hours. I walked the edge. I did not go in.

Evening without a tour

After the day-trippers leave. A spritz that is not on the square. Alleys that sound like water.

Basilica interior

The gold, from inside. I saved it. That is a polite way to say I ran out of patience in the line.

If you have a fifth day.

Burano is already a half-day. These are the leaves that actually fit — vaporetto or a train, not a lagoon cruise with a headset.

Burano / Murano

Vaporetto. Murano for glass, Burano for paint. Do both only if you start early and skip the gift gauntlet.

Padua

Giotto, a university town, a shorter train than people pretend. Trenitalia from Venezia S. Lucia.

Verona

An arena, a balcony you do not need, a city that walks. Train. Back before the last vaporetto if you time it.
