You stop looking for sidewalks and start listening for water. Four days of bridges, wrong turns, and a vaporetto that is just a bus with better scenery.
The first day I kept hunting for a curb. Then I stopped. Venice is islands that decided streets were optional. The monuments are loud. The alleys are the trip — and Burano is the day you remember you can still leave the labyrinth.
Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.
Tickets for the palace, a spritz that is not a souvenir, and how not to treat a gondola like a bus.
The mosaics are the point. Modest dress. The square floods in acqua alta — boots, or a different morning.
The Bridge of Sighs is a corridor with a nickname. Book the palace. The exterior is free and still does the work.
The bridge is a walk-up. The market in the morning is the version that still sells fish, not fridge magnets.
It is a bus on water. Line 1 is slow and useful. Venezia Unica for tickets. Do not guess at the machine in a crush.
A vaporetto, not a mirage. Color, lace, lunch. Combine with Murano only if you like glass more than time.

San Marco — you pay to hear the orchestras. Dorsoduro — Accademia, quieter nights. Cannaregio — actual grocery stores, kinder rates. Sleep near a vaporetto stop you will use.
A small hotel on a side canal. Skip the room with a palace view you will photograph once. Breakfast included is not a small line.
The city wakes up. Crowds, yes. Light on water. One of the two windows that behave.
Heat, cruise days, a crush on the Rialto. Go early or go somewhere else at noon.
The other good window. Acqua alta starts to visit. Pack for wet stone.
Fog, acqua alta, fewer people. Carnival if you booked it. Cold feet, good alleys.
The historic city is walkable until it isn’t — a dead end, then a bridge. Shoes that forgive stone.

Piazza San Marco is a waiting room that charges for the chairs. Orchestras, flood boards in winter, a basilica that looks like it was assembled from several empires.

Burano is a vaporetto, then a village that decided gray was optional. Lace shops, a leaning campanile, canals that look posed. I stayed longer than the timetable wanted.

More color, fewer people if you walk one canal over. The island is small. The photographs are not.

Venice rewards the alley you did not mean to take. A bridge, laundry, a boat that is someone’s driveway. This is the city after the postcard.
Four days is a first draft. These are the rooms I didn’t get into — the ones I’d book first if I went back tomorrow.
I did the façade. The halls, the prisons, the sigh. Next time I buy the ticket before the square fills.
