Bayside docks, Atlantic spray, Everglades boardwalks, macaws that refuse to whisper, and four or five days that swing from snorkeling to neon without asking permission.
One hour you are in turquoise chop on a speed boat; the next you are on an Everglades boardwalk watching the light go gold. South Beach does the postcard. Little Havana does the cafecito. I kept the water, the birds, the night, and a painted buoy at the end of the continental map.

The useful layer — boat operators at Bayside, Everglades timing, and Cuban food that does not need a reservation until it does.
Art Deco, white sand, Ocean Drive. Busy on purpose. Walk it once in daylight and once when the neon argues back.
Murals that change, galleries, breweries. Free to wander the walls. Better before the evening crowds own the sidewalks.

Speed boats and bay cruises leave from Bayside. Celebrity-island narration optional; the water is the point.
A bayfront villa and gardens, or quieter sand at Crandon / Bill Baggs. Softer Miami when South Beach is too loud.
Boardwalks, airboats, birds, alligators. A different Florida an hour from downtown. Go early; bring water.
Operators cluster at Bayside Marketplace. Book a morning slot if you want smoother water and fewer elbows.
Reserve Bayside ↗National Park entry plus airboat if you want the roar. Some outfitters include hotel pickup. Confirm hurricane-season closures.

Long daySouth Beach sand, Wynwood walls, Little Havana sidewalks. Show up. Bring sunscreen that means it.
Walk upHam, roast pork, Swiss, pickles, mustard, pressed bread. Versailles or a smaller counter — both valid. Lunch that defines the city.
$8–12Season runs roughly October–May. Cold claws, mustard sauce. Joe’s is the legend; expect a wait and a bill.
$40–60Citrus, cilantro, ocean-fresh fish. Latin Miami on a plate. A beach-adjacent lunch that does not weigh you down.
$15–25Sweet, strong, tiny cup. Ventanitas all over Little Havana. A dollar or two and a better afternoon.
$1–2Tart, graham crust, Florida classic. Save it for after seafood. Touristy slices still taste like the trip.
$8–12Mint, lime, rum, South Beach bar light. One is atmosphere. Three is a schedule change.
$12–18Winter is peak — Art Basel and holiday weeks need months. Summer is cheaper and wetter. Shoulder spring is the value play.
South Beach — walk to sand and deco. Brickell / downtown — bay access, Bayside boats, less spring-break volume. Wynwood-adjacent — murals and evenings, farther from the beach.
Oceanfront premiums buy a view you can walk to for free at sunrise. A solid Brickell room plus rideshare often beats a deco lobby you will leave every morning.
18–26°C — best overall. Low humidity, beach weather, peak prices and crowds. Book early for holidays and Ultra season.
22–29°C, still excellent water, fewer crowds after spring break. Humidity rising. Strong value window.
26–33°C, hurricane season. Afternoon storms, sticky air, lowest rates. Pool days and flexible outdoor plans.
Storm risk easing, warm water, deals before the winter rush. November is often the quiet win.
South Beach, Wynwood, and Little Havana are walkable once you are there. Between them, Miami sprawls — plan the hop.
FreeDowntown Metromover is free and useful near Bayside/Brickell. Metrorail for longer spines. Not a full beach network.
Free / cheapBay tours and snorkeling runs are part of the itinerary, not a transfer. Budget a half-day of water.
TourThe default between neighborhoods. Surge after club hours is real. Split when you can.
AppDay trips south and west are easier with a car or packaged tour. Parking in South Beach is a sport — skip it if you stay beachside.

Airlines and TSA set the bar for boarding — not a new visa stamp.
MIA is the main hub; FLL is a real alternative. If you continue to Nassau after Miami, that becomes an international leg — passport and any Bahamian entry rules apply.

Mask, salt, and water clear enough to make the mainland feel optional. Snorkeling off Miami was the reminder that this city is also a coast — not only a skyline with palm trees.

Docks, turquoise slips, the observation wheel spinning over the marketplace. Bayside is where the bay tours start and the city pretends to be a marina village for an afternoon.

Two frames, same spray. A speed boat on Biscayne / the Atlantic is loud on purpose — islands blur, guide jokes about celebrity docks, and your hair learns who is in charge.

Macaws that look Photoshopped until they move. Miami’s tropical volume shows up in feathers as much as in neon. I kept the frame because the color was the city’s thesis.

Boardwalk, golden water, a line of trees that is not a beach. The Everglades day reset the trip — quieter than South Beach, stranger than a skyline, worth the drive.

Miami after dark is a different passport stamp you do not need. Later — or on a long day south — the Southernmost Point buoy in Key West is a painted exclamation mark at the end of the continental road.
Four or five days covered water and wetlands. These are the Miami chapters I still owe.
On the must-see list, light on my hours. The villa and gardens deserve a slow afternoon without a boat ticket waiting.
Half day Vizcaya ↗Crandon or Bill Baggs — quieter sand than South Beach. I stayed closer to the neon and the docks.

EveningLittle Havana’s last-Friday street party. If your calendar misses it, the cafecito still works — the festival does not.
Last FridayI got the buoy. I did not get a slow Duval evening or a morning without a return-bus clock. Next time, sleep there.
