Mexico City street and landmark views

Mexico · Field notes

MEXICO CITYAltitude, murals, and a capital that never lowers its voice.

Pyramids at dawn, Frida’s blue house, trajineras, mezcal, and ~2,250 m of thin air. Five or six days is a first draft of a city that keeps talking.

The capital doesn’t whisper.
It layers.

Mexico City overwhelmed me the good way — Teotihuacán stone, Frida’s rooms, trajineras, Bellas Artes marble, street tacos that recalibrate dinner. Culture isn’t only in museums here. It runs the sidewalk. Altitude is the quiet tax.

Where I actually walked.

Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.

Intel

The useful layer — book Frida weeks out, hydrate at altitude, and ride the Metro like you mean MX$5.

Zócalo

Cathedral, National Palace murals, Aztec stone under the plaza. Start the historic center here.

Anthropology Museum

Sun Stone, rooms that eat a full afternoon. Best museum in the country — plan 3–4 hours minimum.

Xochimilco

Trajineras, mariachi, floating vendors. Touristy, UNESCO, still a joy if you bring people.

Casa Azul

Frida’s blue house in Coyoacán. Book weeks ahead. Intimate, heavy, worth the ticket fight.

Teotihuacán

Pyramids an hour out. Climb if open, balloon at dawn if you want the city from the sky.

Bellas Artes

Marble, murals, the dome that photographs like a dare. Art that argues in public.

What stayed on the roll.

Seven chapters — pyramids and balloons, Casa Azul, canals, murals, anthropology, San Miguel, Tolantongo.

Teotihuacán, from the ground and the air

Sun, Moon, Avenue of the Dead — then a basket at dawn. The city of the gods makes more sense when the pyramids shrink under you.

Casa Azul, then Coyoacán

Frida’s blue house — bed, mirror, garden, pain turned into color. Cobblestones outside. Churros after, because the city insists on both.

Xochimilco afloat

Painted trajineras, mariachi for hire, vendors sliding past with flowers and snacks. Aztec engineering dressed as a party. I went loud on purpose.

Bellas Artes and the walls that argue

Marble palace, murals that refuse to whisper, a university mosaic that treats concrete like canvas. CDMX art doesn’t stay indoors.

Anthropology, properly

The Sun Stone energy, rooms of pre-Hispanic weight. I budgeted hours and still left wanting another morning.

San Miguel de Allende

Pink Parroquia, streets painted like a dare. A colonial town that somehow fits inside a CDMX itinerary if you give it the whole day.

Tolantongo, the thermal gorge

Turquoise pools cut into mountain, caves with warm water, a waterfall that feels invented. Hidalgo overnight energy — CDMX’s wildest side quest.

Still on the list.

Five or six days still miss rooms. These are the ones I’d open first next time.

Diego Rivera murals (more)

I caught pieces. Secretaría de Educación Pública and a slower National Palace morning are still owed.

Morning

Plaza de Toros / lucha

Spectacle nights I didn’t schedule. Different CDMX — loud on purpose.

Night

Chapultepec deeper

Castle, lake, more museum wings. I used the park as a corridor to Anthropology and left too soon.

Half day

Late-night taco crawl

I ate well. I didn’t do the dedicated midnight route. Roma after midnight is unfinished business.

Night

If you have another day.

I already left the city for pyramids, San Miguel, and Tolantongo. These are the other leaves that still fit.

Teotihuacán

Already on the roll — still the essential leave. Balloon at dawn if the budget allows; pyramids either way.

Day

San Miguel de Allende

Colonial color, Parroquia pink. Long day or overnight. Bus or tour from CDMX.

Long day

Grutas Tolantongo

Thermal gorge in Hidalgo. Better as overnight than a punishing same-day return.

Overnight ideal

Puebla / Cholula

Food, a pyramid under a church, a city day that isn’t CDMX’s sequel. I didn’t get there.
