Veda with an umbrella in front of Manneken Pis

Belgium · Field notes

BRUSSELSAn umbrella and a bronze boy.

Rain, a statue smaller than the souvenir shops, a square covered in gold, and three days of frites, cobbles, and Europe in miniature because the weather said so.

The boy is small.
The square is not.

Brussels captured me in the rain: an umbrella, a bronze kid behind a fence, then Grand Place turning the volume up. The pentagon is a walk. Heysel is a metro. I ate standing up and let the cobbles argue with my ankles.

Where I actually walked.

Every tagged stop is on the map. All pins shows them together — tap a name to zoom in. Each popup opens the same place in Google Maps.

Intel

The useful layer — Heysel tickets, STIB for the atom, and a square that does not take reservations.

Grand Place

Gold guildhalls, a square that does the work. Night is the better photograph. You do not need a ticket. You need to look up.

Manneken Pis

Smaller than the souvenir. An umbrella helps. Two minutes, a fence, a bronze boy who has been famous too long. Then walk away.

Mont des Arts

A garden, a view, the city stacked. The photograph is the stairs. The museums next door if you still have eyes.

Mini-Europe

The continent in miniature because the weather said so. Replicas you have already stood under elsewhere. Oddly soothing. Heysel, not the pentagon.

Street art

Comic murals, a wall that is not Grand Place. Walk the lanes off the gold. Brussels is funnier than the EU posters.

Cobbles

The pentagon is a walk. Ankles, rain, a city that expects both. This is how you actually see it.

What stayed on the roll.

Six places I actually stood in. Not a complete Brussels — just the frames I kept.

Walls with a punchline

Brussels paints its side streets. A mural, a joke, a city that is funnier than the EU quarter. I kept the wall, not the parliament.

An umbrella and a bronze boy

He is small. The fence is bigger. I held an umbrella and took the photograph everyone takes. Then I left, which is the correct visit.

The square that does the gold

Grand Place at full volume. Guildhalls showing off. I stood in the middle and let the stone finish the sentence.

The view with a garden

Stairs, a lawn, Brussels stacked below. Mont des Arts is the pause between the square and whatever museum you will skip.

Europe, pocket-sized

Eiffel, Sacré-Cœur, Pisa — the trip I had already taken, shrunk. Mini-Europe is silly. It also works. Heysel, a ticket, replicas in a row.

The cobbles

This is the city under your feet. Ankles, rain, a pentagon that is older than the waffle carts. I kept two frames of stone because the gold already had enough.

Still on the list.

Three days is a first draft. Heysel without the Atomium still bothers me. The EU quarter does not.

Atomium

I did Mini-Europe and left the atom for later. It is next door. If you go to Heysel, do both or admit you came for the toys.

Magritte museum

Bowler hats, a sky that isn’t. I stayed outside on the stairs at Mont des Arts and called it culture.

EU quarter

Skip unless you care. Glass, flags, a neighborhood that works for other people. I did not need the parliament to believe I was in Brussels.

Skip

If you have a fourth day.

Bruges is the leave people mean. Ghent and Antwerp if you want a city that still has a job.

Bruges

The actual day trip. Train, a canal, a town that knows it is pretty. Book nothing except the train. This is the leave people mean.

Day · train Belgian train ↗

Ghent

Less postcard than Bruges, more city. A castle, a river, a student energy Bruges sold off. Train.

Day · train

Antwerp

Fashion, a station that shows off, diamonds in a window. Go if Bruges already filled the canal quota.
