Marble that still argues with the sky, a museum under the hill, and three days of walking like the stones are keeping score.
Athens captured me in the heat off the marble: the Parthenon from below, then from the rock, then in the museum where the pieces had somewhere to sit. The monuments are loud. Plaka is a maze you will lose on purpose. I bought the combined ticket and walked until the columns had made their point.

The hill. Early, or the marble cooks you. Good shoes — the stone is a slide. The Parthenon is the point and also just the largest argument.
Under the hill, the pieces that came down. Glass floors, caryatids in better light. Sometimes a separate ticket. Go after, or before if you like context first.
The marketplace that became a field of columns. Combined ticket. Walk it in the morning while you still have patience.
The temple that still has a roof, more or less. Best-preserved. I stood there longer than the Agora wanted me to.
Marble stadium, a horseshoe, the first modern Olympics. Walk the track. The seats don’t care that you’re tired.
Herodes Atticus, on the slope. A theatre that still holds nights. From above it’s a postcard. From the path it’s a wall of arches.
Official: hhticket.gr (Hellenic Heritage). Timed entry on busy days. Skip the booth scramble in summer. Don’t buy a reseller on Dionysiou Areopagitou.
Timed in peak hhticket.gr ↗Acropolis plus a handful of other sites — Agora, Olympieion, Kerameikos, and the rest of the bundle. Valid several days. This is the move if you’re walking the ancient center.
The move Combined ticket ↗The Acropolis Museum is not always in the same envelope. Check. Book it if the day is busy. The excavation under the glass is half the visit.
Separate often Museum ↗Metro, bus, tram. Tickets at machines or the app. Airport line is a different fare. The center is a walk; the rest is a metro.
City ticket OASA ↗Its own ticket, not the combined archaeological bundle. Walk-up is usually fine. The marble is the exhibit.
Own ticketPlaka, Monastiraki, looking at the Odeon from the path, the changing of the guard if you time Syntagma. Show up early for the hill.
Walk upPita, meat, onion, tzatziki, standing up. The honest meal. Don’t overthink the restaurant with the Parthenon on the menu.
€3–8A tray, a weight, béchamel. Lunch if you have a siesta coming. Not a light idea.
€10–15The village salad. Tomato, cucumber, onion, feta that didn’t come pre-crumbled. Olive oil like they mean it.
€6–10Grilled, simple, a taverna that isn’t performing. If it’s rubber, keep walking.
€12–18Phyllo, nuts, honey that sticks to the afternoon. With coffee. Once is a serving.
€3–5Anise, ice, a small glass. With something salty. Not a night out unless you want it to be.
€4–8Easter and high summer: months ahead. Shoulder: a few weeks. The Acropolis ticket is a separate, earlier click in peak season.
Plaka / Monastiraki — walkable to the hill, nights, noise. Koukaki — quieter, still a walk to the museum, the side of the Acropolis that behaves. I wanted to walk at dusk, so I stayed where the marble was still in view.
The hotel with the Parthenon on the balcony is a line item. A side street in Koukaki and your feet. August is hot enough to change the plan.
Warm, not yet a furnace. The easiest Athens to walk. Easter can be a crowd. Still the window I’d pick twice.
Marble that burns. Go at opening. Hide at noon. The islands are calling everyone else, which helps a little.
The heat lets go. Sea still possible. Fewer people on the hill. September especially. This is a good second window.
Mild compared to the north. Occasional rain. Museums less crowded. Some hours shorter. A coat, not a parka.
The ancient center is a pedestrian argument you will lose, happily. Marble, stairs, cats. Shoes that grip.

Three days is a first draft. These are the hills I didn’t climb — the ones I’d do first if I went back tomorrow.
